DAY 09
Jesus sanctifies himself and us
John 17:16-19 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
The Hebrew word “Sanctify” means to make holy, to be pure or to consecrate to God. Notice that God’s word (truth) is what sanctifies us. Jesus was born sanctified. He lived his entire life consecrated to God. How could Jesus sanctify himself? Or why would he need to sanctify himself? Jesus said for their sakes I sanctify myself so that they could be sanctified by the truth or by their faith. At the cross Jesus became our sacrificial Lamb, our substitute. He took our place as a sinner. He became sin. He died on that cross and paid the price for our sins in full. He was buried. He buried our sins in the tomb and put them out of God’s sight. He sanctified himself by resurrecting from the dead forever free from our sins. He ascended into heaven and placed his own blood on the Mercy Seat in heaven sanctifying himself and his bride forever. We are sanctified by this truth. When we accept Jesus as our Savior our sins and sin nature are placed on Jesus. Our old man (sin nature) dies with Christ. We are buried with Christ in water baptism. When we come up out of the water we resurrect with him a brand new man forever free from our sins. We will never be condemned or judged by God for our sins because Jesus bore them for us. This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. When you believe the gospel (truth) you are made holy, pure and consecrated to God. At the cross Jesus made an exchange with you. He took your place as a sinner. He became sin. He gave you his perfect righteousness, as a free gift. You became righteous. He took your sin and gave you his holiness. His blood testifies to the Father that the price for your sins have been paid for by his death on the cross therefore his blood justifies you. He loved you so much that he laid down his life so that you could be forgiven, righteous, and holy before your Heavenly Father. Now you can boldly and confidently come before the throne of grace and obtain mercy and find help in your time of need. There is nothing you can do to make yourself righteous or holy before God. The Prophet Isaiah writes that our attempts to be righteous before God are as filthy rags. The true righteousness and holiness before God is revealed in the gospel. We are given, as a free gift, God’s righteousness and holiness when we believe the gospel and receive Jesus into our hearts as our Lord and Savior.

PrayerFather I thank you for making an exchange with me. I thank you for bearing my sin and giving me your righteousness and your holiness. The truth found in your gospel sanctifies me before you Holy Father. I am now holy just as you are holy.

Confession
I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I am holy and pure before my Father in heaven. My faith in Jesus’ finished work at the cross makes me righteous and holy. All my judgment for sin has been paid for at the cross therefore healing belongs to me. I rebuke sickness and pain and I receive healing in my body. I am the redeemed of the Lord and I receive the abundance of God’s grace to heal me and keep me well.
